The National Medicines Safety Agency (ANSM) has warned of the intensive use of macrolides, antibiotics used to treat whooping cough, due to a current epidemic. The high consumption of these drugs causes supply tensions, particularly for pediatric forms, but now also for adults.
Pierre-Olivier Farenq, director of the ANSM crisis center, explained that several measures are being considered to limit these tensions: recommendations for good prescriptions, imports, and quotas.
In addition to macrolides, the ANSM closely monitors other medications such as amoxicillin and paracetamol for children, due to supply difficulties observed during past winters.
The ANSM winter plan, launched for the first time in 2023/2024, aims to anticipate and limit supply tensions for health products during winter, a period conducive to the circulation of viruses.
