In France, only 20% of healthcare workers get vaccinated against the flu each year. Faced with this insufficient rate, the National Academy of Medicine now recommends making vaccination mandatory for all healthcare personnel. According to its report, revealed by France Inter, healthcare workers remain highly exposed to the virus and can transmit it unknowingly, as the flu can be asymptomatic.
The Academy believes that mandatory vaccination would reduce infections, mortality, and costs to society. It points out that the flu represents between 1 and 2 billion euros in expenses each year, compared to 20 to 30 million euros to vaccinate nearly 2 million professionals. Furthermore, absenteeism among infected healthcare workers contributes to the disruption of services.
For the report's authors, refusing vaccination amounts to ignoring healthcare workers' responsibility towards their patients. They also call for improved information, tailored to each individual's level of knowledge, in order to combat vaccine hesitancy. Many healthcare professionals do not feel concerned and neglect annual vaccination, despite it being free and well-tolerated.
The latest Social Security financing law provides for the possibility of making vaccination mandatory, subject to an opinion from the High Authority for Health expected this summer.
