The Coca-Cola Company announced on Monday a massive recall of its sodas sold in France and Europe due to excessive levels of chlorate. This recall affects cans and glass bottles of Coca-Cola, Sprite, Fanta, Fuze Tea, Minute Maid, Nalu, Royal Bliss, and Tropico, which have been in circulation since November in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Germany, and Luxembourg.
The products bear production codes from 328 GE to 338 GE. Although the majority of unsold products have already been removed from shelves, Coca-Cola continues to remove the remaining products and asks consumers not to consume them. They can be returned to the point of sale for a refund.
Tests carried out at the production site in Ghent revealed high levels of chlorate. Chlorate in food originates from chlorine-based disinfectants used in water treatment and food processing. Long-term exposure to chlorate can cause health problems, especially for children with iodine deficiency, although a high intake in a single day is unlikely.
