Researchers from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich) have created a gel capable of neutralizing the effects of alcohol. This gel breaks down alcohol in the digestive tract before it reaches the bloodstream. It was tested on mice, which were able to consume alcohol without suffering any effects.
The gel transforms alcohol without producing acetaldehyde, a compound that damages the liver. If the gel is ingested before or during alcohol consumption, it can transform alcohol before it enters the bloodstream.
When administered to alcohol-intoxicated mice, their blood alcohol levels decreased by 55.8% five hours after alcohol consumption, with no additional accumulation of acetaldehyde. However, if alcohol is already in the blood, the gel cannot work.
According to Raffaele Mezzenga, researcher at the ETH Zurich, this gel could be useful for those who wish to consume alcohol without suffering the harmful effects. It might also ease hangover symptoms. However, it should not encourage excessive alcohol consumption.
Rodent trials have shown promising results, with less damage to the liver and intestines, and reduced weight loss. Clinical trials on humans are planned soon.
