In a first for the United States, health authorities have just authorized a brand of condom to be sold specifically for anal sex, with the aim of encouraging the use of this protection against sexually transmitted infections.
Condoms were already widely used—and highly recommended—for anal sex, which carries a higher risk of transmitting diseases like HIV. But until now, studies on the anal use of condoms had shown a failure rate higher than the required 5%, meaning too many condoms slipped or broke.
But a new study conducted by independent researchers and funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has shown a failure rate of less than 1%. 250 men who have sex with men and 250 men who have sex with women participated in this study.
This improved result is due to the use of a suitable lubricant, which reduces friction.
