The French are sleeping less and less: the average has fallen to 6 hours and 50 minutes, and a quarter sleep less than 6 hours. More than half wake up tired, and 38% suffer from sleep disorders, especially insomnia. Women, young people, and night shift workers are the most affected.
This sleep debt is explained by noise, artificial light, screen use, irregular work schedules, and heat waves. The consequences are significant: cardiovascular risks, mental health problems, decreased concentration, and accidents.
Sleep quality is also deteriorating: fragmented nights, an unbalanced weekend/weekday rhythm, and frequent morning fatigue. A lack of exposure to natural light disrupts the biological clock, while 58% sleep with their smartphones on, a source of both light and noise.
Noise pollution and heat waves further exacerbate these nighttime difficulties. Faced with this situation, the INSV calls for greater public awareness and the promotion of genuine sleep hygiene.
