The French Directorate of Research, Studies, Evaluation and Statistics (DREES) has published its latest report on disability-free life expectancy in France. In 2024, at age 65, men can expect 10.5 years of healthy life, while women can expect 11.8. These are significant gains since 2008, but have been almost nonexistent for the past five years.
At birth, the women's advantage in longevity almost disappears when considering years lived without disability: 64.1 years for women, 63.7 for men. Since 2008, this indicator has declined slightly for women, while it has increased for men.
At age 65, healthy life expectancy is increasing faster than overall life expectancy. In Europe, France remains well-positioned: 3rd for women in 2023, 7th for men, both above the EU average.
