The subject may seem indiscreet, however it could also reassure more than one of us. American women are significantly more disloyal than they were 20 years ago. At least that’s the case according to a new study published by the prestigious National Opinion Research Center, an American organization affiliated with the University of Chicago.

20 years ago, 10% of American women admitted to having cheated on their significant other at some point. Today, the number of women who admit to cheating has risen to 14.7%. When you take into account the rise in population numbers and thus the increased number of extra marital affairs that women take part in, this then represents a rise of 40%.

Specialists recognize that certain socio-occupational factors are partly responsible for this upwards trend. Women today are more active than they were 20 years ago, and many women are professionally and economically independent from their husbands. This means that a woman is significantly less concerned about the implications of divorce.

It is also impossible not to acknowledge the explosion of online dating sites over the last two decades that have made it easier to meet people. The social networks that gained popularity in 2004 have also had a significant influence.

The champions of infidelity still remain men, however. According to the latest studies, more than one out of every five men admits to having had an extra conjugal affair.
